Sin U Lam
Sin U Lam is an artist from Macau working in London, holding a BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Arts. She is shaped by this singular culture. Portugal is deeply woven into Macau's identity, in ways that reach far beyond colonial legacy. Macau was Portuguese territory for over 400 years, from the mid-16th century until the handover to China in 1999 (!), and this duration left profound, soulful marks.
Sin U Lam's intense relationship with color might be described as the “Portuguese” quality in her work; color as emotional expression, in the way one encounters it in the great Portuguese painters of the 20th century such as Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso or Nadir Afonso. Spend a little more time with the paintings, however, and a certain melancholy becomes perceptible – the one the poet Fernando Pessoa described so lastingly. The longing for something intangible, that one perhaps never possessed and never will.
As a painter, Sin U Lam seems to know that the „outside" always appears poor or incomplete
and that richness lies within. She paints this inner richness in its splendour and structural complexity. Her brushwork carries a delicate sense of touch – in the way she applies pressure to the brush, and in the transparency that emerges through her wet-in-wet technique. Foreground and background often flow into one another, while the brushstrokes run tender and translucent. Striking is the way space is constructed – not as backdrop, but as something active and inhabitable. Transparent layers of color, shifted planes and precisely placed forms create pictorial spaces that simultaneously open and condense. Soft, atmospheric gradients meet clear, bodily presences; hovering planes, linear interventions and block-like forms assert themselves and structure the composition. Color is deployed not decoratively, but architecturally: it builds tension, marks transitions and determines the rhythm of the painting.
